Braised red cabbage

At this time of year when there is plentiful supply of apples I love making this recipe. I prefer to juice my own apples since the juice is not so sweet as the store bought versions. This is perfect with some vegetarian sausages, mash and onions. The cabbage turns out really sweet with a slight vinegar taste, I love it, it is definitely a favourite during the Autumn and Winter months.


  • 1/2 Red Cabbage, shredded
  • 300ml Apple juice
  • 200ml Water
  • 2 tbsp Balsamic Vinegar
  • 2tbsp Brown Sugar
  • 1 tsp Mixed spice
  • Pinch of crushed cloves


  1. Mix all the ingredients together and simmer for 2 hours.
  2. Top up with water if the mixture turns a bit dry.
